Featured in Welcome Home Magazine: Tim & Ava Green’s Forever Lakefront Home

After decades of designing beautiful homes for others, Tim and Ava Green finally turned their creative vision inward—and the result is nothing short of extraordinary. Their newly renovated West Lake home was recently featured in Welcome Home Magazine (Spring 2025), showcasing a deeply personal project rooted in thoughtful design, family, and a lifetime of experience.

Longtime owners of Flair Interiors in Kalamazoo, Tim and Ava have been shaping interiors for decades. Today, they’ve passed the business on to the next generation—daughter Jessica and son-in-law Adam McGuire—while continuing to do what they love most: design with heart, intention, and a fearless sense of style.

A Cottage Transformed Into a Forever Home

Purchased in 2023, the original home was a modest 1,200-square-foot cottage built in 1957. What followed was a full renovation and thoughtful expansion that nearly doubled the home’s size. By building upward rather than outward—due to strict lot-line regulations—the Green's created a two-story lakefront retreat that feels open, welcoming, and perfectly tailored to their lifestyle.

The redesign reimagined the entire floor plan. Former spaces took on new life: the original kitchen became a walk-through closet for the primary suite, while the former living room transformed into a stunning galley kitchen that now serves as the heart of the home.

Bold Choices That Feel Effortless

Known for their confidence with color and texture, Tim and Ava didn’t shy away from bold decisions. The kitchen features navy blue cabinetry paired with white appliances, granite countertops and backsplash, and a custom range hood over a gas stove. Light hickory luxury vinyl plank flooring flows throughout the home, balancing the richness of the cabinetry.

Natural light pours in through a sloped ceiling and three skylights, creating an airy feel that belies the home’s footprint. And yes—wallpaper made its mark. Grass cloth in the kitchen and floral wallpaper in the closet prove that layered textures can feel timeless when done right.

Designed for Everyday Living—and 18 Grandchildren

The primary suite offers serene lake views, a neutral color palette with fun fabrics & accents, and a spa-like en suite with dual shower heads and subtle navy accents that echo the kitchen. A clever walk-through closet connects directly to the laundry room and pantry—because great design should also be practical (and perfect for midnight snacks).

The main living areas center around a gas fireplace with custom cabinetry, flowing seamlessly into a dining space with a bar and easy access to the outdoors. Upstairs, the Green's created a private haven for visiting family, complete with a family room, kitchenette, “friendship table” for games, bunk room, and breathtaking elevated lake views.

Outdoor Living, Elevated

The exterior is just as intentional as the interior. A poured aggregate patio leads to the waterfront, where a dock system and grandfathered-in boathouse create the perfect setting for lake life. A deck atop the boathouse captures cool breezes, while an outdoor kitchen—with grill and refrigeration—keeps entertaining effortless.

Surrounding the home, mature maples and crabapples provide seasonal beauty, while a low-maintenance landscape design replaces traditional lawn with stone, gardens, and a tranquil water feature. The exterior’s teal LP SmartSide siding and shake accents add personality and curb appeal, proving that bold choices can still feel classic.

A Legacy of Design—and a Look Ahead

Perhaps the most meaningful part of this story is the passing of the torch. Tim and Ava are now retired and enjoy serving as consultants to Jessica and Adam as they lead Flair Interiors into its next chapter—continuing a legacy built on craftsmanship, creativity, and relationships.

Being featured in Welcome Home Magazine is an honor, but more than that, this home is a reflection of what great design can do: support how you live, bring people together, and tell a story that lasts.

If you’d like to explore how that same level of thought and care can transform your home, we’d love to welcome you into the Flair Interiors showroom.
